Average Calculator

Calculate the mean average of a list of numbers.

How this tool works

The arithmetic mean, often called the average, is the sum of the numbers divided by how many numbers are present. It is a quick way to summarise a set of comparable values.

How to use it

  1. Enter numbers separated by spaces or commas.
  2. Select Calculate average.
  3. Check that all intended values were included and that the result makes sense for your data.

Example and practical tips

For 4, 6 and 8, the sum is 18 and there are three values, so the average is 6.

The mean can be affected strongly by unusually large or small values. This tool calculates the arithmetic mean; it does not calculate the median, mode, weighted average or statistical uncertainty. For mixed units or categories, calculate an average only when that operation is meaningful.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use decimals?

Yes, numeric values may include decimals.

Is average always the middle value?

No. The arithmetic mean is the sum divided by the count; the median is a different measure.
